How the Spaced Repetition Algorithm Works
VibeLing uses a spaced repetition algorithm. Its job is to show words exactly when you begin to forget them. The user does not need to control this process. The app automatically determines when a word should appear again.
Learning Stage
After adding, a word enters the learning stage. At this stage, the word appears in training up to 3 times per day. This stage usually lasts 3 to 4 days, depending on how often you make mistakes.
The goal of this stage is to quickly reinforce a new word in memory.
Review Stage
After the learning stage, the word moves to the review stage. At this stage, intervals gradually increase:
1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 8 -> 16 -> 32 days and so on. Each time, the interval increases by about two times.
Example
If a word appears after 8 days and you answer correctly, next time it appears after 16 days.
Word Difficulty Tracking
The algorithm also accounts for how difficult a word is for you. It analyzes the last 10 answers for that word. If you make mistakes often, review intervals become shorter.
Example
If you answered correctly 8 out of 10 times and made 2 mistakes, the next interval is multiplied by 0.8.
As a result, difficult words appear more often, while easy words appear less often.
If a Word Is Forgotten
If you make a mistake at any stage, the word is treated as forgotten. In this case, it returns to a 1-day interval, and the review process starts again. This allows you to go through the repetition ladder again and reinforce the word.
When a Word Is Considered Learned
A word counts as learned after nine successful reviews. In your vocabulary it moves to "Known" and stops taking up room in the daily session, but it does not leave the schedule: rare reviews continue so that what you learned is not forgotten.
What You Need to Do
You do not need to think about all of this. It is enough to:
- open the app every day
- start a training session
- answer questions
The algorithm will decide which words to show and when.
