How “dijo” is used

Dijo is the third-person preterite of decir, and decir is irregular in a way worth learning once: dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron. The stem takes the stress, so it is DI-jo, never dijó — an accent on the ending would turn it into a different tense of a different verb.

Two habits differ from English. Reported speech normally keeps the indirect object: me dijo que llegaría, «he told me he would arrive», where English can drop the me. And Spanish splits what English packs into say and tell across three verbs: decir is to say or tell something, contar is to tell a story, hablar is to speak. After dijo que a fact takes the indicative; a subjunctive turns the sentence into an order, and me dijo que viniera means «he told me to come».
