Download the app for free Spanish vocabulary testSpanish has no separate word for the children of a family. Hijos covers sons and daughters at once, so ¿tienes hijos? simply means do you have children — English hears sons in it and Spanish does not. Only hijas, the feminine plural, narrows it down to daughters.
The other split English lacks: hija is a daughter, a child by relationship, while niña is a child by age. A forty-year-old is still her mother's hija and stopped being a niña decades ago. Both hijo and hija also work as forms of address to someone younger, warm or exasperated depending entirely on the tone: ¡ay, hija, qué cosas dices!
hijo son
The masculine, and the form that swallows the plural for mixed groups.
hermana sister
The other relationship in the same generation, and it behaves identically in the plural.
madre mother
The other end of the relationship: you are the madre of your hija.
padre father
And padres in the plural means parents, exactly as hijos means children.
