How “tenemos” is used

Spanish leaves the pronoun out: tenemos already carries the we, and nosotros tenemos turns up only when the we is being set against somebody else. Tener is irregular, but the stem change that gives tengo and tienes skips this form — nosotros and vosotros keep the plain stem.

The trap is the English perfect. We have eaten is hemos comido, never tenemos comido: Spanish keeps haber for the tenses and tener for possession. And tener does work that English hands to be — tenemos hambre, tenemos veinte años, tenemos prisa are we are hungry, we are twenty, we are in a hurry.

Forms of “tenemos”

How “tenemos” differs from similar words

  • hemos we have — the auxiliary

The verb for the perfect tenses: hemos comido is we have eaten. Tenemos comido is not Spanish.

  • nosotros we

The pronoun Spanish normally drops. Putting it back stresses who: nosotros tenemos coche, tú no.

  • poseer to possess

Ownership in legal and written Spanish. Everyday having is tener, and poseer un coche sounds like a deed of sale.
