How “sobrino” is used

English needs two words where Spanish needs one and a half. Sobrino is the nephew, sobrina the niece, but the masculine plural sobrinos covers a mixed set: mis sobrinos is my nieces and nephews together, and English has no ordinary word for that at all.

The word moved a generation on its way out of Latin. Sobrinus there meant a cousin on the mother's side; Spanish shifted it down to the next generation and left cousin to primo. One layer further gives sobrino nieto, the great-nephew — grandson-nephew, built out of the same pieces as nieto itself.

Forms of “sobrino”

  • sobrino masculine

  • sobrino nieto great-nephew

Common phrases with “sobrino”

How “sobrino” differs from similar words

  • sobrina niece

The feminine, and a separate word in Spanish as in English. Only the plural merges them.

  • primo cousin

What sobrinus meant in Latin. The two words swapped places somewhere between Rome and Castile.

  • nieto grandson

The other direction down the family. Sobrino nieto borrows this word for the generation below a nephew.

  • tío uncle

The other end of the same relationship: you are the tío of your sobrino.
