How “enero” is used

Months are lower case in Spanish — enero, febrero, marzo — and capitalising them is the most visible mark of an English speaker writing Spanish. Dates behave differently too: en enero for in January, but el 5 de enero for on 5 January, where Spanish uses de and has no word for on at all.

The name comes from the same place as January does, the Latin Ianuarius for Janus, the god who faced both ways at the turn of the year. Spain also has a phrase for the month that English lacks: la cuesta de enero, the January slope — the lean weeks of climbing back out of what Christmas cost.

Forms of “enero”

  • enero lower case, always
  • en enero in January
  • el 5 de enero on 5 January
  • a principios de enero in early January

Common phrases with “enero”

  • en enero in January
  • la cuesta de enero the lean weeks after Christmas
  • el uno de enero New Year's Day
  • a finales de enero at the end of January

How “enero” differs from similar words

  • febrero February

The next one, and lower case for the same reason. So are the days of the week.

  • mes month

El mes de enero is the ordinary way to name it in full, where English would just say January.

  • invierno winter

Which enero falls in north of the equator and not south of it — a real difference between Spain and Argentina.

  • año year

Año nuevo starts with it, and the phrase año y medio shows the same de-less counting as the dates.
