How “encantado” is used

Two senses on the card, and the commonest use of the word is neither of them. Said on its own when you are introduced to someone, encantado means pleased to meet you — a clipped form of encantado de conocerte. It agrees with the speaker, so a woman says encantada, and getting that wrong is audible immediately.

Both listed senses come from encantar, to cast a spell. A castle keeps the literal one and is haunted; a person under the everyday weakened one is simply delighted. That same weakening gives me encanta, which is how Spanish says I love it about anything short of a person.

Forms of “encantado”
