Download the app for free Spanish vocabulary testTwo neighbouring words do most of the work this one gets credited with. For «fit» in the everyday sense Spanish says estar en forma, not ser atlético; and someone who plays sport is un deportista, where English would happily say an athlete. Atlético describes the build and the aptitude — un cuerpo atlético, un chico atlético — and reads a little like a line in a profile.
Watch the noun behind it. El atletismo is track and field specifically, not sport in general, so «he studies athletics» is not estudia atletismo. And if you have met Atlético in a football club's name — Atlético de Madrid, Club Atlético Boca Juniors — that is this adjective frozen into a proper noun, with nothing to say about the players' physiques.
