How “lila” is used

German has two words where English has one, and the line between them is a matter of taste rather than of physics. Lila is the everyday purple; violett is the more precise and slightly more formal one, closer to what a paint chart means by violet.

And lila is one of the very few German adjectives that does not decline: ein lila Kleid, not ein lilanes Kleid — though spoken German is starting to invent lilane anyway. Purpur exists too, and like French pourpre it means a dark red, not purple at all.

Forms of “lila”

  • lila indeclinable
  • violett violet — declines normally
  • der Purpur purple in the imperial, dark-red sense
  • lilafarben purple-coloured — the way round the indeclinability

Common phrases with “lila”

  • ein lila Kleid a purple dress — no ending
  • dunkelviolett deep violet
  • in Purpur geboren born in the purple
  • lila Kuh the purple cow — the Milka advert

How “lila” differs from similar words

  • violett violet

More precise and a shade more formal. Where English has one word, German chooses between two.

  • Purpur purple — the imperial dye

A dark red, like French pourpre and Spanish púrpura. It is not what English calls purple.

  • rosa pink

The other famous indeclinable colour, and it behaves exactly like lila.
