How “Pronomen” is used

The grammatical term is the same as in English, but the social use has not travelled the same way. German pronouns carry gender through four cases, so the English profile formula she/her — nominative plus object form — cannot simply be copied: German would need sie/ihr/ihrer/ihr to be complete, and nobody writes that.

What German speakers do instead is state the pronoun in the nominative alone, sie or er, or use the borrowed English pair outright. The grammatical vocabulary is native and transparent: Fürwort is the old German word for pronoun, literally “for-word”, exactly as pro-noun.

Forms of “Pronomen”

  • das Pronomen singular
  • die Pronomen plural
  • das Fürwort the native term — “for-word”

Common phrases with “Pronomen”
