Download the app for free German vocabulary testHallo is the general greeting, and its range is narrower than English hi in one respect: a German business email does not open with it as readily. Sehr geehrte Frau Müller is still standard where an English writer would put Hi Anna, and Hallo Frau Müller sits somewhere in between, now common but not universally welcome.
Regionally there are rivals: Moin in the north at any hour, Servus in Bavaria and Austria for both hello and goodbye, Grüß Gott in the south. None of them is dialect exactly — they are the normal words in their region.
Guten Tag good day
Formal and tied to the time of day. It has no English equivalent in that slot.
Servus hello, goodbye
From Latin servus, “servant” — the same origin as Italian ciao.
tschüss bye
The parting counterpart, and just as informal.
