How “guten Morgen” is used

The -en ending is not decoration: the phrase is shortened from ich wünsche Ihnen einen guten Morgen, “I wish you a good morning”, and the accusative case survived the cut. Same for Guten Tag and Guten Abend — but Gute Nacht, because Nacht is feminine.

German draws the lines by the clock more strictly than English does: Guten Morgen until about eleven, Guten Tag after that. Gute Nacht is only ever a parting, never a greeting. In speech it shortens to Morgen!, and in the north people say Moin at any hour of the day.

Forms of “guten Morgen”

How “guten Morgen” differs from similar words

  • Morgen morning — and tomorrow

Capitalised, der Morgen is the morning; lower case, morgen is tomorrow. Only the capital tells them apart in writing.

  • Hallo hello

Neutral and unattached to any hour.

  • gut good

The adjective itself. In the greeting it stands in the accusative — hence guten — because the sentence is a shortened wish.
