Download the app for free Spanish vocabulary testSpanish writes the days of the week in lower case — unlike English, which capitalises them. Viernes comes from Latin Veneris dies, “day of Venus”; the same root gives French vendredi and Italian venerdì. English Friday goes back to the goddess Frige instead: the same idea through a different pantheon.
The form does not change in the plural: el viernes and los viernes look identical, and only the article separates “this Friday” from “on Fridays”. And no preposition is needed: el viernes, not en el viernes.
día day
Spanish weekdays are masculine because of the implied día: el lunes, el viernes.
semana week
Fin de semana is the weekend. The Spanish week starts on Monday.
mañana tomorrow — and morning
One word for both: mañana por la mañana is “tomorrow morning”.
