How “descargar” is used

One verb, seven jobs — and the thread through all of them is taking a load off. Cargar is to load, descargar is to take that load away: off a truck, out of a battery, out of a cistern, off your chest. The computer sense is the newest of the lot and now the most common.

Watch the spelling in the past tense. The g has to stay hard before an e, so yo descargué, not descargé. Same trick as in pagar and llegar.

In Spain you will hear bajar just as often for files — bajar una app. Descargar is the safer default everywhere else, and the only one of the two that works for the truck and the battery.

Forms of “descargar”

  • descargar infinitive

  • descargué yo, preterite
  • descargando gerund
  • descargado past participle

Common phrases with “descargar”

How “descargar” differs from similar words

  • cargar to load, to charge

The mirror image, and the root of the whole family: load the truck, charge the battery, load the page.

  • bajar to go down, to download

Everyday stand-in for the file sense, especially in Spain. Its core meaning is to go or bring down, so it cannot replace descargar for a truck.

  • subir to upload, to go up

The opposite move with a file: subir un archivo is to upload it.

  • instalar to install

What comes next. Descargar only puts the file on the device.
