How “ajustes” is used

Before it means adjustments, ajustes is where you go to change the wifi password: Ajustes is the name of the Settings app on a Spanish phone. That is the sense most people meet first, and in anything technical it is the default reading of the plural. Latin American Spanish and much of Android say Configuración instead.

Outside software the word keeps its literal sense — small corrective changes to a suit, a budget, a machine. The singular ajuste is one such change, and also the fit of a garment. Ajuste de cuentas belongs to neither: it is a settling of scores, and in the press it means a gangland killing.
